You don’t just look after the patient, you look after their parents, siblings—sometimes even their nan shows up with stories and advice!On a day-to-day level, what are we doing? Well, you might see us giving medications, checking vital signs, and looking after children with anything from a little cold to chronic conditions or even disabilities. Sometimes it’s in hospital wards, other times it could be in a school or a community clinic.Something that’s stuck with me from my first pediatric ward—oh, I remember it absolutely vividly—was this little boy who hadn’t been responding to treatment, and honestly, we were scratching our heads. His mum—she just knew him inside out—spotted signs before we did. She shared something so specific, and adjusting our care plan based on her insight turned his recovery right around. It was such a reminder: families aren’t just “visitors,” they’re experts on their child. That’s what makes this job so unique. We’re not just educators and carers, we’re advocates for these little ones, making sure their voices—and the family’s voices—are always heard.Alright, so let’s talk a bit about where pediatric nurses actually work and how some roles are a bit more specialized. Not every day is spent on a general ward. We’ve got primary care nurses—think of those routine check-ups, immunisations, helping out with sniffles, rashes, that sort of thing. But sometimes it’s much more intense, like pediatric acute care, where you’re dealing with sudden, serious illnesses or injuries.There’s also specialty fields—so, you have pediatric oncology, where nurses work with children facing cancer, or cardiology for heart conditions, even endocrinology for hormone disorders. I mean, some nurses focus just on newborns—the neonatal nurses, they are honestly amazing, looking out for the tiniest, most fragile patients.Now, care environments can look very different. On a general pediatric unit, you’ll find children with both acute and chronic conditions—like asthma flares, broken arms, diabetes management. But when children are critically ill or need those machines beeping all hours, they go to specialized units. There’s the NICU, which is for newborns who need intensive care, and the PICU, which is for older children in critical states. I remember one instance—can’t give too much detail, privacy and all—but there was this young patient in the PICU after surgery, who needed constant monitoring. You can’t take your eye off the monitors for a second; the specialist training for those nurses is next-level. It’s like, you’re part detective, part nurse.Oh, and then there are rehab units—where nurses help kids recover enough to get home and get back to school, even if they’ve got new disabilities to adjust to. That’s where family-centered care and teamwork shine. It’s not just about the treatment, it’s about preparing them—and the family—for what comes next.So, you might be wondering, how do you actually become a pediatric nurse? Well, let’s break it down. You start out as a registered nurse—go through nursing school at a college or uni, then pass your NCLEX credentialing exam. Now, during your studies, you’ll get some pediatric experience through your placements and coursework, but there isn’t a separate undergraduate degree just for pediatric nursing.If you want to specialise, usually you apply to work in a place that cares for children—like a children’s hospital or a pediatric ward. Once you’re there, you get extra classroom or on-the-job training focused on kids. They might call it an internship or a residency. It’s, well, a bit of an “in at the deep end” feeling, if I’m honest, but that’s when you learn the real deal. Plus, after gaining some experience, you’ve got the option to take certification exams to become a certified pediatric nurse—more credibility, more job options.Continuing education is a huge part of it. Pediatric nurses are always picking up new skills by reading journals, taking classes, and going to conferences—if you ever fancy a weekend surrounded by hundreds of nurses swapping stories and ideas, that’s the place! Honestly, making the transition from adult to children’s care can be daunting at first. I remember it well—I thought, “Well, how different can kids be?” and then, blimey, you find out quickly that children’s diseases, their treatment, even how you talk to them, it’s all unique.
